Uber locked in a deal that could reshape the autonomous ride-hailing market. On July 18, 2025, the company confirmed it will deploy 20,000 Lucid Gravity SUVs over six years, each equipped with Nuro’s Level 4 autonomous system. These vehicles will operate exclusively on Uber’s platform, either directly or through fleet partners. The first prototype is already running test laps at Nuro’s Las Vegas site. Commercial rollout begins next year in a major U.S. city.
Lucid’s Gravity SUV is built for this. It offers 450 miles of EPA range, charges 200 miles in 11 minutes, and supports Tesla’s Supercharger network. The vehicle’s zonal architecture allows seamless integration of Nuro’s autonomy stack. No retrofits. No delays. Hardware is installed at Lucid’s Arizona facility. Software is commissioned by Uber.
Lucid stock closed at $3.04 on July 18, up 32.7% week-to-date. Volume hit 142 million shares, the highest since its Nasdaq debut. Uber shares were flat. Nuro remains private, valued at $6 billion after its April Series E round.
Waymo expanded its Austin service area to 90 square miles this week. Tesla’s robotaxi pilot in Austin remains invite-only, using Model Y vehicles with safety monitors. Nuro’s system is fully autonomous. Lucid’s Gravity meets all Level 4 hardware requirements. The software is already operational.
Uber is investing $300 million into Lucid and additional capital into Nuro. The vehicles will be exclusive to Uber’s app. Ride pricing will sit between Uber Comfort and Uber Black. The company wants full control over hardware, software, and rider experience. This isn’t a pilot. It’s a production roadmap.
If the deployment hits scale, Uber will own the largest premium autonomous fleet in the U.S. by 2030.
